Adobe Acrobat Reader won't open a file.?

I try to open a pdf file in Acrobat Reader, but then I get a message that says "There was an error opening this doent. This viewer cannot decrypt this doent." So I am curious as to why this is so, or what's going on, and how to go about fixing the problem.
